Crossbreeding Could Help Coral Survive Warming Waters

Mixing and matching coral reefs of the same type from different latitudes can help coral reefs survive in spite of the high temperatures in the oceans, according to a new study.

"Coral you already have genetic variability to adapt to temperature change," said Mikhail Matz, an assistant professor of integrative biology at the University of Texas in Austin. "It's just a matter of the transfer of these mutations of the hot spots of the sites that will be heated very soon because of global warming."
And she studied Dr. Matz and his colleagues coral reefs from warmer areas naturally from the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and those in the cooler waters300 miles to the south. The researchers found that coral larvae with parents from the north, where the water is slightly warmer, were up to 10 times more likely to withstand high temperatures in laboratory studies.
The researchers reported their findings in the journal Science.
And he found Dr. Matz and his colleagues have also been that when hybridized coral from the north and the south, and that genes can be transferred to withstand the heat. "Not only afford inherited the heat, but it is largely genetic," he said.
