Wikipedia Launches
Anyone who has recently visited Wikipedia would be aware of the new competition banner on top of every page. Wikipedia has launched its “Wiki Loves Monuments” photography competition and Pakistan is competing in the it for the second time.

Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual international photography competition held during the month of September. The competition is organized by Wikipedia community members of each participant country with help from Wikimedia affiliates. Wikimedia Community User Group Pakistan is responsible for Pakistan in the competition and is the official affiliate of Wikimedia Foundation in Pakistan.

The Wiki Loves Monuments competition has been taking place since 2010 and has been officially categorized as the biggest photography competition in the world by Guinness World Records. Pakistan became a part of the competition for the first time last year.

Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual international photography competition that promotes cultural heritage sites of all participating nations

The competition aims to promote the cultural heritage sites of Pakistan and all the other participating nations. The competition will help promote photography of historically and culturally significant sites across the country. The competing photographs will be chosen for use in Wikipedia articles for those historic sites. The competition also helps in bringing a country’s cultural heritage to people across the globe.

Last year’s competition saw over 8,750 contestants from 41 countries and submitted over 308,000 photographs. More than 700 contestants were from Pakistan alone and they submitted more than 12,000 photographs last year. This year’s competition consists of 33 countries.

Local jury will shortlist photographs and forward them to the international jury. The evaluation process will begin in October. Jury will judge photos based on their technical quality, originality, creativity and potential usefulness.
What Do The Winners Get?

Winner of the competition will get a scholarship worth 2,000 Euros to attend the international Wikipedia conference in Italy in 2016. The top 10 photographs from Pakistan will get an “exclusive” Wikipedia gift. Pakistani Jury will select their own three best and seven highly commended photos for the international contest. Local jury will present their own awards as well.
How Do You Take Part?

Taking part in the competition is very easy. All you have to do is register for a Wikipedia account and start uploading photos. Photos must be from one of the listed subjects i.e. mentioned sites. To upload photos, participants will have to go here and select the site and press an upload button next to the listed site to register their entries. Photos must be original and should not have any copyrights or other watermarks on them. Any photograph submitted will be free for use by anyone without copyright infringement.

The competition will last the whole month of September so participants should gear up and start uploading soon to stand a chance at winning this competition. If you need a guideline or guess what the judges might be looking for, you can view last year’s local winners here.
